Not all dog breeds are the same. The type of breed that a dog has will tell you what to expect with their behavior. Each breed of dog will have distinct behavioral characteristics, which you should know about before adopting a dog of a specific breed. One particular breed that can be quite a handful and is not for everyone to adopt is the wolf-dog.
Wolf-dogs are known for being single event learners. This makes it hard for wolf-dogs new things, and it can be incredibly hard to earn their trust, especially if they’ve experienced trauma caused by people. Because of this, a lot of wolf-dogs are re-homed in wolf-dog sanctuaries.
A girl named Sarah Varley received a message about a wolf-dog named Indigo that got hit by a car. The caller stated that the people who owned Indigo didn’t know what to do and asked if Sarah could help. When Sarah saw Indigo, she was heartbroken. One of Indigo’s legs was so deformed that it prevented her from walking.
Eventually, Indigo went through two surgeries to correct the injuries on her two front legs. Sarah tried finding a foster home for Indigo. She didn’t plan on fostering another dog because she already has two pit bulls living in her home. And, Sarah thought that having a wolf-dog might complicate her living situation, especially for her pit bulls.
However, Sarah never stopped thinking about Indigo. She went to visit Indigo after she had her surgery, and as soon as she opened the door, Indigo went straight towards her with her paws in pink casts. It was at that moment that Sarah fell in love with Indigo.
Sarah had experience with wolf-dogs before. She worked at a wolf-dog sanctuary in the past and knew that it could be quite a challenge taking care of one at home. Because of the trauma Indigo experienced in the past, Sarah knew that it could even complicate taking care of an already challenging animal. However, she soon found that Indigo is an entirely different wolf-dog.
Sarah found that Indigo’s very sweet, loving, and playful. Indigo craves for interaction with people. Sarah and her partner, Matt, took things slow with Indigo. Eventually, Sarah was able to take Indigo out in public for a walk. At one point while walking Indigo, they came across a woman with two miniature schnauzers.
Sarah was afraid that Indigo might suddenly become aggressive. However, Sarah was pleasantly surprised when Indigo did the opposite of what she was scared of. Indigo, playfully crawled towards the two dogs and she even rolled over to show her belly to the woman walking the two tiny dogs.
Sarah was so surprised that Indigo let a complete stranger that Indigo never met before rub her belly. Sarah knew that everything would work out with Indigo and decided to adopt her and make her a permanent member of her family.
It took some time for Sarah’s pit bulls to accept Indigo into the family, but when they started playing, Indigo and her two pit bull siblings became inseparable. Here’s a heartwarming video about how Indigo found her forever home.
