Charlie, an 11-year-old golden retriever, experienced major life changes after he lost both eyes because of glaucoma. His owners, Chelsea and Adam Stipe, of North Carolina, quickly identified the burden it caused on their normally energetic pup.
They said Charlie found it difficult to get used to his new normal after the absence of his eyesight. So, in hopes of helping their beloved older dog, they gave him a new friend last New Year. They adopted a puppy, which they named Maverick with hopes that the new pup would brighten up the mood of the old one up.

Both dogs were a bit awkward at first since Charlie was a little hesitant to get close to Maverick. Yet, Maverick soon noticed that Charlie struggles with living his life.
According to Chelsea and Adam, when their dogs would play, Maverick would notice that Charlie would sometimes lose the toy. Maverick then would pick up the lost toy and put it back in front of Charlie, and they would continue playing together.

The couple then started calling Maverick their “seeing-eye puppy.”
Having Maverick helped Charlie get a new outlook on life. This included his ability to be able to learn a few new tricks of his own.
In a post on the dogs’ Instagram, the family said that Maverick is always around to help Charlie and Charlie teaches Maverick manners.

The couple then narrated how Charlie’s eye troubles started a year before they adopted Maverick. They said glaucoma caused Charlie to lose his right eye. After another year, he lost his other eye too. And after that, they got him Maverick.
Chelsea revealed that she and her husband spent all their retirement savings to pay for all the treatments that Charlie needed. She said that for them, it was the easiest decision.
According to Chelsea, it was a no-brainer to empty their retirement plan to take care of their pooch because Charlie makes them happy.
