We have heard of the saying: “Life is short, so live life to the fullest.”
One puppy diagnosed with a terminal disease is living the best life inside a senior dog shelter. The old dogs at Vintage Pet Rescue, Rhode Island are more than happy to welcome their newest housemate. On usual days, they just lie around and sleep. With the new puppy around, they learned to be more energetic!
Trigger, an eighteen-month-old Whippersnapper, looks perfectly fine and healthy. At first glance, one would not think he is sick. In truth, he only has five months to live. Doctors diagnosed him with renal failure after his owners took him to the Providence Animal Care Center in Pennsylvania. Trigger urinated excessively – a clear sign that he’s not doing well. The poor puppy’s family were hopeless – and did not know what to do with Trigger.
That’s when Vintage Pet Rescue stepped in. One of the nonprofit organization’s volunteers, Kristen Peralta, asked the family if they could take care of Trigger, to which the family said yes. According to Kristen, their organization owns a senior animal retirement center. They help take of senior dogs and cats from different shelters. They also take in old dogs from owners who could no longer take care of them.
According to Kristen, her husband first heard about Trigger through a friend. They called the Providence Animal Center and asked them about Trigger. The hospital staff sent Kristen videos of Trigger playing with other dogs in the hospital. That information convinced Kristen to bring Trigger with them to the Vintage Pet Rescue. The volunteer said it is so hard for terminal dogs to be adopted, so she stepped in.
As soon as Trigger joined the other center residents, Kristen knew she made the right decision. For a dog who’s supposedly ill, Trigger is pretty energetic. Center staff observed Trigger as a fun-loving dog who loves to play and to go on walks. Despite his condition, the puppy maintained his happy demeanor – playing and interacting with his senior companions.
Kristen said Trigger wants to enjoy every day – he plays, jumps, and runs, just like any other healthy dog. The other old dogs could keep up with him for a minute or so, but they end up resting halfway through the play. Trigger looks as though he is happy with his stay at the Vintage Pet Rescue – he knows well that he is surrounded by people and dogs who love him dearly.
