When Tropical Storm Gamma and Hurricane Eta hit Southern Mexico in October, the region experienced severe flooding and heavy rainfall. Over 300,000 individuals were affected by the typhoon, many of whom recounted how they had never experienced such floods in more than five decades.
Right after the storms had passed, the Mexican Marine Secretariat (SEMAR) immediately headed into the flooded streets and scoured for stranded people in need of rescue. That was when they spotted a frightened golden Labrador retriever, hanging onto a window sill in an abandoned building and standing on his hind legs.
The water had already risen to half of the pup’s body, and it was evident how confused and tired he was. So without second thoughts, the Marines immediately paddled their boat to where the canine was perched. They decided to soothe him first with head pats to calm him and gain his trust.
After a few moments of petting him, the pup willingly placed a paw on the boat and let the Marine carefully lift him out of the water. He was eventually transferred to a bigger boat before finally sent to the SEMAR headquarters, where he was given medical attention and care.
SEMAR spread the word about the pup in case his family was looking for him. However, no one stepped forward to claim the dog, so the Marines decided to take him in and make him a part of the Navy. This was to SEMAR’s advantage, as well, since one of the officials said that the canine had the potential to be a helping paw in their rescue teams.
Although he has no name yet, as a naming contest for him is still underway, SEMAR will likely put him up for training to be a rescue dog soon. Watch the canine’s heartwarming rescue video here that had attracted over 65,000 views on SEMAR’s Facebook page.
