Remi Ishuzuka was relentless in her pursuit to save Ara. She is a former stray dog that was picked up and brought to a shelter. Although the shelter staff didn’t know if she had a previous owner, they are certain that she has had a traumatic experience with humans. And because of her aggression towards them, she has been deemed unadoptable.
Even with the other dogs in the shelter, the white German Shepherd couldn’t seem to make any connection. When a month passed without any improvement in her behavior, she was put on the kill list.
Remi had to go all out to save her.
Rescue-only dog
This rescue story started when Remi, who had two dogs already, went to the shelter to adopt one more. She saw Ara and fell in love with her. Once she heard her story, it further strengthened her resolve to save her.
Remi went to the shelter every day so that she could earn Ara’s trust. They needed to make a connection so that she could safely take her home. The kind woman would sit by her kennel with her back towards the dog. This is so that the anxious pup would not feel threatened by her presence.
Remi would patiently wait for Ara to come to her. She would speak gently so that the dog would become familiar with her voice. She would also bring some food to feed the frightened pooch.
As time passed, her strategy slowly worked. Every time she would leave, Ara would climb the wire fence and gaze at her. But the dog only trusted her. So when she filed for adoption, she discovered that because of her continued behavioral issues, she was listed as a rescue-only dog.
This meant that she couldn’t be adopted by the public, and only rescue organizations can take her. Remi was completely heartbroken. But she didn’t give up. With time running out, she called everyone that could help her.
She got in touch with a volunteer at the shelter who vowed to help her rescue Ara. They talked to numerous rescue organizations, and after some time, they were able to get an agreement with one of them. The rescue group took Ara from the shelter and then let Remi adopt the dog.
From then on, Remi worked hard with Ara, teaching her how to trust humans and become a happy dog. After a few months, they had amazing progress and Ara has never been so loved.
