Sophie Gamand met Blossom for the first time in 2014. The photographer has a project called Pit Bull Flower Power, a series featuring portraits of homeless pitties that she hoped would honor these brave souls and educate people about the plight of these usually misunderstood breed. She planned to take serious and moody photos, but Blossom was among those who would not cooperate.
Blossom was given a colorful flower crown to wear during the session, and she certainly knew how to pose for the best and most dramatic effect. She had a huge smile that surprised Sophie. Her photo was the perfect poster for the breed’s loving nature and resilience. She was so cheerful that you would not think she has been a stray.
Fast forward to six years after their initial meeting, Sophie was again surprised to see Blossom’s portrait. But this time, it was more of a shock. Gone was the happy and exuberant pup and was now replaced by a subdued senior dog.
The adorable pup’s life story was a series of unfulfilled hope and disappointments. Blossom was first rescued in 2013 while wandering around a mall in Long Island. She was soon adopted but was returned immediately when it seemed like she did not get along with the family’s original dog.
Blossom was again adopted in 2015 and has been happy with her new family. However, when the family had to relocate to Germany, the poor pup was once again surrendered. In the succeeding years, Blossom had been adopted two more times but was also returned by both adopters.
Life’s disappointments have obviously worn her down. Looking through her lenses, Sophie was sad to note that Blossom seemed to have lost the spark on her lovely eyes. She is a far cry from the exuberant and cheerful dog she once was in 2014. Although she is still sweet and very loving, Blossom’s spirit has been a little bit broken.
Sophie is hoping that the charming pup’s new pictures will lead her to her true forever family. Blossom especially needs it right now since she was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. Interested adopters can get more information about Blossom’s needs by contacting Brookhaven Animal Shelter. You can also follow Sophie’s project on Instagram and Facebook.
